Within 3 months, my skin was clearing up, and at 6 months my skin was crystal clear. During this time, I had to strip my whole skincare routine to the bare minimum. The catch with taking Accutane is that you are required to be on some form of birth control while taking it. So although I had my dream skin, I was back on the pill — the thing that had been my acne band aid for so long.

After a lot of thought, research, and nervous breakdowns, I decided to rip the band aid off and come off the pill. I was tired of taking synthetic hormones that were essentially just a safety net for my skin, and I knew that long term, I would have to come off it at some point.

Fast forward 4 months later, and here we are! Do I get breakouts here and there? But having pores, breakouts, and spots is a part of life.

So what do I use now to keep those pesky spots at bay? For a while after Accutane, I was still using the same Dove soap bar to cleanse my skin morning and night. I learned the hard way that this soap bar was now too gentle for my skin and was clogging my pores.

My post-Accutane skin needed something gentle, but pore-clearing. The active ingredient that I looked for in cleansers was Salicylic Acid. It is a chemical exfoliant and effectively removes the outer layer of skin to prevent clogged pores. I did a lot of research before deciding which face washes to use, but I knew I wanted something different for morning and night.

For my night-time routine, I did not want any active ingredients in my cleanser because night is when I use a harsher acne treatment and did not want to combine ingredients. I wash with this foaming cleanser twice at night; once to remove my makeup, and then again to actually cleanse my skin. Your skin has a natural moisture barrier that regulates and protects your skin. I have noticed my skin is brighter, more even and clear. I just finished a year-long course of Accutane, and this has helped keep my breakouts away and my skin looking fresh!

Promising review: "This stuff is fantastic! I have very sensitive skin and it really helps soothe any irritations from allergens. It is the best moisturizer I have ever used and it even makes exfoliating easier. My skin feels softer and smoother when I use it, but even more important is that when I don't use it, I notice.

If I don't use it my skin is blotchy and dry. Also, I am a former Accutane patient, so I highly recommend to anyone who has been on Accutane but still suffers from sensitivity and red bumpiness from time to time.

Promising review: " I'm almost 40 years old, and I took Accutane when I was My skin, as a result, is very chronically dry and lack of luster or glow. Very dull. And I've used A LOT of products, as I'm a licensed cosmetologist and being in the hair skin and nails industry, products are readily available to try. I've used a lot of other brands of vitamin C serum and I love them. Most of them are watery and most smell bad. And it actually smells like oranges. Which is also nice. It absorbs into my skin really quick and it leaves my skin looking fresh and glowy but not oily.

My skin feels really good for the rest of the day. Or until I clean it. Overall I'm not sure how much it's actually helping my skin long term healing wise, but nothing I have tried over the years has. But I don't like the way my face feels without this serum on it. Promising review: "Awesome! I wash my face and put it on right after and then use another moisturizer on top. I feel like it has really helped calm down my super irritated and dry skin! It can do a hell of a lot of other stuff, too, like reduce redness, soothe irritation, heal cuts, and reduce oil and inflammation.

Promising review: "OMG! Cannot give this toner enough credit for fixing my pores! I really recommend this to people with sensitive skin. I started using this while taking Accutane and I was in a really bad place due to irritation and scarring. Try it!! The sugar exfoliates your lips, while the wax leaves your pout feeling soft and smooth, with a hint of sheen — it may even help you favorite lip color last longer!

Promising review: " I'm currently on Accutane so my lips are constantly peeling. I had a lip scrub from Ulta, but I was running out and it was quite expensive.

I really love this stuff. To me it smells like Christmas. It's amazing. It delivers powerful, ultra-micronized Benzoyl Peroxide and is enhanced with my proprietary plant-based phytoestrogen to balance the hormonal component.

Simply blend a thin layer to affected areas with clean fingers. Use once a day or increase to two or three times daily as needed. This treatment can be used morning or night and wears well under makeup. Many people who have acne-prone skin avoid moisturizing out of fear that a moisturizer will make their skin oiler. However, the epidermis requires moisture no matter your skin type!

The Aloe Vera Blemish Soothing Moisturizer is amazing for acne patients because it is oil-free, serving as an effective, lightweight, non-greasy hydrator.

After my Accutane treatment, I thought my days of pimples, spot treatments, and heavy concealers were behind me, but these past 9 months have proven me very wrong.

At the time that I wrote that post, I was acne free. About a year after the end of my treatment, I started having breakouts again. The breakouts were definitely less severe than what they were before Accutane, but after going through all the discomfort and inconveniences of treatment I really wanted clear skin.

I started using this routine religiously 2 months ago, and in the past 2 months, I have seen a great deal of improvement in my skin, both in the frequency and length of breakouts. I decided to start birth control in an attempt to regulate my hormones and clear up my acne.

After 3 months, the birth control that I was on did not do anything to change my skin. I called my doctor and she recommended that I switch to Yaz. My breakouts are almost entirely during the week of my period and even then are fewer and less inflamed.

My new skin care routine is my favorite though. I centered my routine on 3 things: thoroughly cleansingmaintaining moistureand treating breakouts and enlarged pores. For each, I sought out specific active ingredients to help heal and clear my skin. For a while after Accutane, I was still using the same Dove soap bar to cleanse my skin morning and night. I learned the hard way that this soap bar was now too gentle for my skin and was clogging my pores. My post-Accutane skin needed something gentle, but pore-clearing.

Your skin has a natural moisture barrier that regulates and protects your skin. I am a firm believer in using moisturizers to counteract any dryness and maintain this moisture barrier.

To seal in moisture and prevent excess water loss, it is important to include emollients and humectants in your skin care routine. Ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerin draw water into the skin and help the skin maintain its natural moisture barrier. I look for moisturizers that contain both ingredients and have them listed early on the ingredients list. After I cleanse my face, I do not dry my face with a towel, as the fibers of the towel can be rough and abrasive on your skin instead, I pat dry around my eyes, lips, and chin and leave the rest of my skin slightly wet.

Providing your skin with ceramides helps replenish its levels and promotes healthy skin. My skin care routine includes a harsh prescription medicine from my dermatologist, 0. These two products are the reasons for my heavy-handed moisturizing routine. Benzoyl Peroxide is anti-bacterial and causes the skin to peel to heal the acne faster. My skin reacts well to Benzoyl Peroxide as long as it is a low percentage. At night, I use the prescription Tretinoin Cream which is a retinoid that helps decrease acne breakouts and encourage faster healing through faster skin cell turnover.

Lower percentages are also prescribed to decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. A pea-size amount of both products is plenty to cover your face. It is also really important to not use other active ingredients like Salicylic Acid or Benzoyl Peroxide with the retinoid. I went back to my dermatologist while using this routine about a week ago. He was happy with my skin at the time of the visit but unhappy to hear that I still have the occasional breakout. He did ask if I wanted to go on another round of Accutane, but that is not something I want to do right now.

We needed a thorough yet gentle cleanser and this has been perfect. FYI: Reviewers say it can be a little irritating to your skin at first, so go slow with it!

Cleanse, moisturize, sleep, repeat—or not. After two rounds of isotretinoin more commonly known in its generic form, Accutane in just four years, my skin was finally clear.

Up until then, my skincare routine had consisted almost entirely of me trying to put out fires aka those angry, red bumps that appeared on my face instead of stopping them before they happened. As a teenager and into my early 20s, I never took the time to get to know my skin—instead, I was in a constant battle with it. But after the months of dermatologist appointments that included consistent blood samples and pregnancy tests Accutane is no joke , I knew I needed to make a change.

Previously, whenever my face broke out or I was feeling insecure about my skin , I ran to the drugstore. I tried just about every cheap acne product known to mankind but never stopped to realize that many of these products were actually making my skin worse. Many lesser-known name brands or generic drugstore items have mineral oil in them, which, according to Diane Madfes, M. After doing my research and working with my dermatologist to determine what kind of products and ingredients were right for my skin type as well as what to avoid , I realized that investing in higher-quality products is an investment in myself.

Of course, I still have some drugstore favorites , but as someone who used to exclusively reach for the cheapest thing on the shelf, I now believe that good skin care is worth the splurge. My morning routine consists of a simple moisturizing and balancing cleanser to remove any dirt, oil, or impurities that may have cropped up on my skin at night.

Shop it! I finish off my morning with a moisturizer that has SPF because, yes, we need sun protection every day. Olay is one of the drugstore brands that has never failed me or, more importantly, caused me to break out , and their Beauty Crush Award-winning Whip formula goes on a little more lightweight and breathable than the traditional version, which works well for my combination skin. My evening routine is a bit more involved than my morning one. Next, I wash my face using the same cleanser I began my morning with.

Madfes explains that this is because the AHAs work as exfoliators to help fade dark spots in addition to stimulating collagen, so this product is a double whammy of goodness.

About three times a week, however, I add retinol in between the two. I used to be afraid that retinol would be too harsh on my skin, but my dermatologist advised looking for a gentle formula to help with any post-acne scarring and hyperpigmentation.
